It's a very exciting time for me.  On a personal note: I'm getting my Broker's license and my wife her real estate license and she will be joining my team to help you buy, sell and invest in real estate.  Like myself, she has been in the service industry for over 20 years and currently assists clients with Investments products, RRSPs, RESPs, Life Insurance, etc.  I'm also writing a Blog for my children entitled:  NuggetsForMyChildren.com  -  I've been told it's a difficult read so I'm going to try to keep it simpler.  I can't write all day long... so let's get back to real estate...

 

How's the Real Estate Market?  We're getting Mixed Results.  There are fewer number of homes being sold... but the good news is the average price has increased by 5% in Feb 2011 from Feb 2010.

 

How's the Selling Market?  If I was thinking of selling.  Now would be the best time to do so.  There are FEW Listings on the Market.  Less competition usually means higher prices and a faster sale.

 

How's the Buyer's Market?  With new mortgage rules coming in April (30 year amortization from 35) and banks increasing mortgage rates... those 1st time Buyers who are sitting on the fence should try to buy now.  More importantly get yourself MORTGAGE APPROVED and have the bank HOLD the rate! GTA REALTORS® host Ford and Smitherman at TREB AGM

TORONTO, October 19, 2010 -- Just four days before voters make their decision as to the city’s new leadership, Greater Toronto REALTORS® will hear from mayoral candidates Rob Ford and George Smitherman at the Toronto Real Estate Board’s Annual General Meeting.

The meeting will feature AM640 Radio’s John Oakley in conversation with each of the candidates as they individually discuss REALTOR® and City Hall issues.

“Given that TREB hosted the first major debate with the original six hopefuls in May, it is fitting that the two frontrunners return to share their proposed policies with Greater Toronto REALTORS®,” said Toronto Real Estate Board President Bill Johnston.

Recent polls indicate that Mr. Ford and Mr. Smitherman are within a few percentage points of each other with respect to voter support.

While TREB has not formally endorsed any candidates Greater Toronto REALTORS® will be interested to hear the views of Mr. Ford and Mr. Smitherman on a number of issues that affect the city’s buying, selling and leasing public.

“City policies that concern real estate affect every Torontonian because the sector is such a key component of our economic engine,” said Mr. Johnston.

Greater Toronto REALTORS® have advocated their clients’ perspectives’ on a number of issues including the Toronto Land Transfer Tax, which Mr. Ford has committed to repeal if his bid for office is successful.

A public opinion poll conducted earlier this year by Environics Research Group for the Toronto Real Estate Board showed 60 per cent of Torontonians oppose the Toronto Land Transfer Tax, 31 per cent supported it and eight per cent had no opinion.

“Regardless of the outcome of this election, we hope that it will serve as an opportunity to open newdialogue with the City of Toronto’s elected leadership so that the home buying, selling and leasing public are given due consideration in all of the City’s policy decisions.”

TREB Annual General Meeting takes place at the Toronto Congress Centre October 21st at from 10am to 12pm with the mayoral candidates scheduled from 11 am to 12 noon.

Motivating your Child. How ?

If you are a parent of young son or daughter, you probably have the same difficulty motivating your child to do things on his/her own.  Having talked to number of the parents at my son’s soccer academy it appears this “lazy-child” syndrome or “spoiled-child” syndrome, whatever you want to call it, is quite common.

I can remember my childhood… never wanting to be inside the house but outside playing soccer, street hockey, football, baseball… getting the street kids together and just playing.  We had no “extracurricular” activities our parents could afford nor did they have the time to take us.  They were too busy putting food on the table.

Now how do you motivate a child who has everything and has never experienced “hardship”?

I have a bright and talented 9 year old son who won’t do anything unless he has to.  At 9 I remember selling flowers at downtown Toronto street corners.  I know and don’t compare my life with his… but as a parent we have a big hand in fashioning our children's personality and expectations and the worst thing we can do is set them too low and have them reach it.

My son knows to become an elite soccer player he needs to practice on his own.  Yet I rarely see him do it.  I have to take him to the park, or our basement and practice with him.  It “seems” he could give a rat's ass practicing keep-ups, drills, etc. the coaches have taught him.  I've even tried "bribing" him :).  But it didn't work.  $200 for doing 20 keep-ups is not good enough!  Some of you might be thinking why does he need to practice on his own?  If you haven’t heard about the 10,000 hour rule I highly recommend you Google it and read about it.  Or I recommend the book: "Outliers: The Story of Success"

You know what I’m starting to think is as parents we might be spending too much time and energy on our kids.  I’m thinking as a society we might be distracting them with all the materialism that is available today.

I’d like to see some passion in my son but I don’t want to be a parent who is “managing” my child’s life and quite frankly I don’t have the time for it.  I want him to be self-motivated and “really” want to do things in his life.  I would like the fire in him to burn so he would want to achieve his dreams.

I’ve decided to stop his soccer activities for the winter months to see if he really misses playing it.  If other parents had success doing something different to  “self-motivate” their child I’d like to hear from you.  I know if my son would only put 25% more effort he can do exceptionally well in life.

What's the magic guys? :) Anybody?
